The theme for this week was "Are You Ready?"
I told of how we are ready for earthquakes in Mexico. We have a suitcase filled with bug spray, clothing, water and granola bars and it is kept beside the bed next to our shoes. Many seniors have a suitacse by the door for ememgency hospital trips, the same as our pregnant mothers have.
The readings today talk of Christ's second coming and resurrection.
If our faith is strong, we do not need to be afraid of what lies ahead. Our task is to spread the gospel far and wide so that others may be prepared, too.
The Sadducees loved getting Jesus into debates and were always trying to trick Him or prove Him wrong. They used the question of the woman and the 7 brothers.... Deuteronomy 25:5-6 is the idea that if a man died childless, it was up to his brothers to create children with his widow.I think today we would call what the Sadduces were doing was "playing the devil's advocate" by their question.... taking it to such extremes.Jesus adresses their question about marriage but He answers their real question about resurrection. He based His answer on the writings of Moses. Relationships will be different from what we have here and now.
Death comes to each and every one of us when it is our time. Some parctical things we can do to get ready: 1.Fill out your personal information form :) 2.Talk to your family.3.Have a will... a current one 4.Prearrange your funeral 5. [I told about getting our urns made by our friend] All these preparations are getting things ready for those who are left behind.
What can WE do to get ready for that which is to come? Do we need to pack a suitcase? No. Here is what we can do to be ready. 1. Forgive others. 2.Love one another daily and show in your words and actions [and tell people you love them too] 3.Have faith and believe in God. 4.See God working in our church and in our world.
5.Fill your heart with the love of God.
God is preparing for us and it will be beyond our ability to imagine!! Thanks be to God!
